PageRank, created by and named after Larry Page, one of the creators of Google, and was patented on 9 January, 1999. Search engines such as Google determine how important a website is – and therefore its positioning – by the PageRank and reputation achieved.
The reputation of a website or PageRank is given as a numerical value measuring from 0 to 10.

PR0 to PR2 – No reputation – 79% of all websites on the Internet

PR3 – Medium reputation – 15% of all websites

PR4 – Medium to high reputation – 5% of all websites

PR5 – High reputation – 0.6% of all websites

PR6 – Very high reputation – 0.3% of all websites

PR7 to PR10 – Outstanding – 0.1%  of all websites
The incoming links to a web page have a crucial role in determining the PR of the page.

The Google PageRank algorithm considers each link to a page as a vote for that page.

Basically, one that receives many links is more important than a page that receives less links.

There are however exceptions, since Google’s PageRank algorithm also takes into account the quality and reputation of the page from which the link is generated.
For example, a page that has 555 incoming links – or ‘votes’ – from pages with PageRank 1, is as popular and has achieved the same reputation as a page that receives just one incoming link from a web page with PageRank 3.

Another example: A page that receives 93.000 incoming links from pages with PR1, is as important as one that receives a single link from a PageRank 6 web page.
As we can see, Google values the quality of the pages producing the incoming links over the quantity of the same.
The algorithm that calculates the PageRank also takes into account the quality of the web page.  In terms of programming, factors such as W3C and CSS validation, and the speed of loading a web page are very important.
The age of the domain also influences the PR, as Google understands that the older the website the more reputable it is, in comparison with one registered recently.
PageRank updates (increases or decreases, even penalizations) are held approximately every 3 or 4 months, so that you can not predict when the next update will take place.
Online reputation assigned by the PageRank is very important because it allows the user to differentiate a risky page with low reputation from a trustworthy portal with a proven track record. Web pages with PageRank 4 or higher have a certain verifiable reputation and therefore an assurance of quality.
